I like the way this turned out.

im gonna have to say out, sorry.
im glad to see that you enjoyed drawing this and that youre proud of the outcome! the only thing thats throwing me off is the shading. both pictures lack depth in a very big way. your anatomy is really great, like I love the legs in this picture. but the lack of definition is a big factor!! honestly, I think if you worked a little more on SSO and focused on shading/definition, you'd be more than ready to draw here. so give it a month or two, come back and blow us away not only with your awesome anatomy, but show us you can manipulate the tools into creating a clear, finished product. good luck!

Out. So the first thing I notice is that you really dont have a handle on color/shading/depth and the oekaki program itself. i know that you're trying to create depth with darker colors, but you don't have a light source. pick a place where the sun/light is coming from and everything you shade corresponds around that. Also, when you actually paint IRL , with photoshop and whenever it's really successful, people don't just use a darker shade of green/blue, but the color layered with a lot of other colors to make it darker- purples, browns, blues are mixed with green for example, to make it darker. With oekaki, its really tricky to work with this especially so i recommend you practice for a while until you get the hang of it!

Your anatomy isnt bad, but it can be improved (as artists, thats' what we're always looking for right?) instead of practicing on oekaki or another computer program, why don't you grab your sketchbook, head to the nearest coffee shop and sketch people? it helps a lot, they're called figure studies. No matter how good of an artist you are, these always make you better. Try studying not only anatomy and proportion but the balance of people's bodies, the poses, the movement of line ect.

The last thing I want to point out is the painterly style v. solids - i dont think that using soft tones and very hard pixely lines is what you're going to want to go for. Personally, i feel that artists are most successful if they chose one style and stick with it throughout the drawing. pick if youre going to use hard tones, or soft painterly tones, and then stick with it throughout your piece. otherwise, the outcome can be messy. This is especially true using oekaki.

Tryout #1

I've been lurking around for the past couple of days and everybody here seems to be so exceptionally talented. I was on an oekaki that is no longer active (rest in peace) and this place seems to be where it's happening. Glad to see people still so enthusiastic about oekaki!

wow I was very pleased with this until the word 'background' crossed my mind and I had no idea what I was going to do.
I hope this half-assed background counts. :'V
If not I'll make sure in the next tryout.

I love your style, and the cohesive nature of the color palette. I think your anatomy could use some fine tuning, but i adore the background. this picture has energy. I would like to see a different color palette in the next tryout. lovely work! I look forward to seeing more.

what KESS said, also, try to make a background that interacts with the subject
instead of just some fancy colours to make it look less empty
good luck!

CRAZY Monday, January 9th 2012, 8:17 AM
cool style! have you drawn here before? i think i recognize your style from about two years ago. good luck with your second ^^

I know how you feel, because i'm not big with backgrounds either. i'm pretty lazy with oekaki so i hardly have the patience. however, next tryout try to at least ground the subject so they're not floating in space. the background is up to you but i think your chances will be higher if you do make one that interacts with your subject matter.

I do enjoy your style! try to clean up your line work a bit, tapering the edges and making sure it's neat. also, i second what ailaik said about another color palete for your 2nd tryout. Good luck!

if only you've read the rules..
neither tryout is full body, and in both tryouts you hide the hands and lower body in the composition, while those are pretty important to judge your anatomy skills
I vote out
