Has anyone ever been to a National Portfolio Day?
What was it like? What kinds of work did you bring? What kind of feedback did you get?

I'm thinkin' about going to one

thanks!

I never went to one, because I either had missed them/they were too far away from where I lived. I know you got to get there real early though, the lines are insanely long sometimes, a girl at class I know went to one and stood in line for at least 2 hours for Pratt. I think they are kinda crazy from what I've heard, but I suppose they can be helpful. Try to not to bring a whole lot of work, I know they don't want to see every single thing you've ever done, only bring your strongest pieces, and bring a sketchbook too, sketchbooks are important

good advice!
I am very nervous about the sketchbook thing
all my sketchbooks suck horribly and are full of terrible anime so I'm not sure what to do about that
I will probably be doin' a lot of rippin out pages before I go!

CookieCooks Friday, November 26th 2010, 11:11 PM
i'd consider going one too but... yah...
some folks said it gives you a better idea of what kind of portfolio the colleges look for since they'll give you feedback. i also heard you can get accepted? but not sure how that works

i went last year, my freshman year. depending on what kind of college/uni you go to the feedback varies. one that is about promoting their own school wont do much well. usually the feedback will tell you about compositions, colors, background, medium, ect. bring a friend/parent to stand in one line for you while you attend to another one is suggested. that's what i did.
i brought completed works of both digi and trad. i'm thinking bout bringing some unfinish/sketches this year. just let them see the important/presentable stuff first.
i'm going again this year/excited
ohohoohoho oh i love this picture so inquisitive and delicate

I've gone three times now. and um. i brought paintings. It's really helpful if the college you want is there, because you get to get yourself known by them and get to know some stuff about their scholarships/tuition/what they're looking for/blah but usually all of the ones I want to go to aren't there.. you do learn about some other places, though, if you just start going to random lines. I'd sayyyyy.. to me it's sort of a waste of time but at the same time if there were another one I'd go. It's just the standing that's a little tiresome. bring some capri sun. You will get very thirsty and you will not want to be there after a while.

also expect a lot of talented asian people. only asians who do giant portraits go to portfolio day. That's not true BUT IT IS.

woh thanks guys!! your info is very helpful to me!
I'm not sure what to do about my digital things because they are all done on oekaki... and I feel like i should only like... show them things that are nice and photoshoppy even though i do not have anything like that
i will bring so much capri sun and also fruit roll ups
and i am an asian and i will probably bring a giant portrait oops

rhaz_crossbones Saturday, November 27th 2010, 4:13 AM

Oekakis wont really work I dont think, the resolution is too small and it's gonna be a pain for them to print out nicely. Plus a lot of professors don't like things that look pixelly (not just like pixels..but like, pencil tool stuff pixels) I wouldn't put really anything from oekaki unless its like insanely good and you can't tell what it was made with, idk, that's just what i've seen

Missy Saturday, November 27th 2010, 4:48 AM

mmmm okay
such a shame cause i spend about 80% of my drawing time screwing around with oekaki ;__;
oh well

i printed out my oekakis they did come out odd/ew but it's better than not taking them imo. cause

CookieCooks Saturday, November 27th 2010, 3:09 PM
since i typically use chibipaint... they come out looking like tiny photoshop drawings...

bring oekaki work, they honestly wont care
i went 3 years in a row, they dont give a shit if its pixelly or not, they're looking at the quality of your work not what program you did it in
honestly if you have time, dont bring any original stuff or any big portfolio shit, just take pictures and print them off. they say they "like to see originals" but lemme tell ya they were much happier flipping through my neat little binder than waiting for other people to flip thrrough their huge, unwiedly, messy portfolios. and its a PAIN IN THE ASS to carry around huge stuff all day. i never got a single comment about oekaki lines, if they ask just tell them it wont be in your final portfolio

youre a high schooler and they know what you're showing isnt like ~polished~ bring everything, bring shitty stuff, the more they have to flip through the happier they'll be (i know im directly contradicting what some people said but all of my experiences directly contradict them and i had a very helpful time all 3 years. they're looking at your skills not your presentation

other tips:
-show up early, get a map and look it over, and know where you want to visit before anything starts.
-bring a posse!! at least like a parent and a friend, and split up into several lines to make the wait less long. lines for the popular schools get long fast but you can have someone wait for you there while you bounce around from random school w/ short line to random school w/ short line
good luck, i always liked portfolio day so i come online to obnoxiously talk about it every time someone mentions it

The only time I ever went was.. last year? And it was veerrryyy crazy, I didn't even bring any artwork haha I just jumped to the tables to get these great books (like seriously, books) that they all had to describe their school and those are super useful and pretty cool to look at.

My hair is the shortest its been since i was six! I can't help but feel like i've made a terrible mistake dododod
anyway
I might have asked this before (remind me if i have) but how many tries did it take you guys to get accepted? I think i got accepted on my fourth try (ha ha)

aw very cute. you look good with your hair this length.

i lurked around sr forever ago, back before it was three separate oekakis. i didn't have to tryout. i left for more than a year, came back, and just drew lmao no one said anything or tried to make me re-tryout.

jessoso Sunday, November 21st 2010, 12:30 AM

oh i guess i should say i came back to SROA since that's what my bookmark turned into

jollygood Sunday, November 21st 2010, 12:47 AM

Um well I joined back when it was the 3 separate oekakis and drew at SSO for quite sometime before it even had a proper layout and it actually wasn't that busy but I lurked SRON/SROA lots (esp SROA) I never commented tho cause I was shy haha(creepy). I got into SRON on my second go of tryouts, the oekakis merged before I felt good enough to try for SROA.

And that is my overly long answer to a simple question...

Also your new hair is super great you are adorbs! Don't grow it out!!

Man people have been around here for a while!
I joined when there were the three oekakis and drew on sso and stalked sroa before i tried out for the higher levels
as soon as i joined sroa the merge happened though!

I think it took me two tries. I tried out on SROA both times. um........ i forgot when. and I forgot why. Well I think I mostly did it because Vincon. I'm bad at keeping track of time. I should really care more.

I love short hair always and this CASE IS NO DIFFERENT!! I like it both ways on you, though. You work both, girllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll

cheeto Sunday, November 21st 2010, 2:29 AM

aaah i love your new hair! so so so cute

and i been here since 2005, didn't need tryouts here then hahaha. i would start tryouts for SROA every once in a while but i could never be assed to finish enough of them to be judged

Laq Sunday, November 21st 2010, 3:46 AM
avatar
I joined when it was just 1 oekaki and we were all equally bad.
I think i've made it in once when we actually had to tryout but i've never made it since it merged with SROA

ohh my god that is the cutest haircut in the world

it took me two tries...i think a year ago? I think summer of 2009?
