I just started scribbling until I saw some shapes in it and went with those.
That's how I eventually ended up with.. well, a grown-up emo version of Pinocchio, or something.

Great execution of the wood grain. I think the ability to convey polished wood isn't easy.

hey uh, i need help, sorry to kinda use your picture to do that but i dont know any way else of asking for help. i can't launch paintbbs or anything anymore, firefox tells me i need to download a plugin so im like ok ill click the link and it looks like its doing something but after its done it says it failed to install the plugin. so it tells me to install it directly from the website (java's website) and i did that and it still won't work. what should i do? i've never had this problem before, i had java and it ran the oekaki stuff just fine so i dont know what to do. also im sorry again about using your picture to ask for help i wouldve made my own but i cant even launch the thing to make a picture so yeah sorry

Aeon_of_Ethereal Wednesday, January 30th 2013, 6:12 AM
I had the same issue. Go completely uninstall java the reinstall and make sure firefox has it activated by going to your add-ons page.

Ailaik Wednesday, January 30th 2013, 11:35 AM
Firefox and its add-ons.. Who uses Firefox anymore anyway? :P Chrome is way more stable.
Not meant as a flame though, it really is recommendable to switch to Chrome.

kremmel Wednesday, January 30th 2013, 7:23 PM
Since switching to Chrome I've experience no applet issues! So if that fix doesn't work, give it a test-drive.

Also this is great, love the red lineart and the tiny little boots.

i guess ill oekaki in chrome then, i do have it downloaded. thanks, i'll try it.

Great work; love the hard shadows.

moofie Friday, January 25th 2013, 5:33 AM
I love the angle and the background, it's so simple yet clearly depicts their environment at the same time. It's hard to tell where walter's sitting though. It looks like the back seat but if it was he'd be sitting backwards at that angle. Great job though.

Ailaik Friday, January 25th 2013, 10:39 AM
Colours are a bit too saturated for my taste, but you nailed the looks and the angle is really cool.

Oh lordddy.
When was the last time I used an oekaki anyway?
Well. it only took a century to re-learn some of the things. Me picking up my tablet pen was like a toddler learning to walk for the second time. smiley
So this guy is.... Jeffery. You think that suits him?
No, no.. you're right. XD Just.. no. I'll figure something out for him.

Oh yeah and I'm, um. Moofie. Hi.

I regret to inform that I did not read about the tryout thing. So I guess this is my tryout number #1! ^_^ I also regret to inform that it's not a "full body picture" but my second tryout will hopefully make up for that. Idk if tryouts are still done here and what not but. yeah. c:

Welcome back to oekaki. Do you primarily use traditional media?

moofie Friday, January 25th 2013, 5:20 AM
Thank you. (: And yes I do, why do you ask?

ZacharyB Friday, January 25th 2013, 4:13 PM
Simply because you had mentioned that you hadn't picked up a tablet pen in a while, yet you clearly have an active skill.

My first tryout! You can all call me Aeon btw.

I had a few issues getting my tablet pan settings to work with the oekaki since they were adjusted to work perfectly with Photoshop.

moofie Wednesday, January 23rd 2013, 8:23 AM
Aw. My crappy tablet has no settings. D: I can't set pressure or nuffin. Nuffin. at. all. </3

This is cute though. His face is so sweet. :3 perhaps the background could be made more defined with a few more highlights? ^_^

Aeon_of_Ethereal Wednesday, January 23rd 2013, 11:17 PM
I'd tried putting some in, but my dark overlay to desaturate the image muted them quite a bit. I didn't want them too shiny or the baby wyvern's highlights wouldn't have been as intense as I'd wanted.

I had to resort to switching my tablet from pen mode to mouse mode to get it to stop doing a color selection every time I tried to draw.

What kind of tablet do you use btw?

moofie Thursday, January 24th 2013, 3:24 AM
wacom cte-440. cheap little thing. I got it when I was 12 and didn't use it for awhile and the cd got lost, and I failed to remember it had when. It dawned on me today that even though I got it 9 years ago I could probably still find the drivers online and I found it! :D So now I can change pen pressure and stuff.

That def made my day. :D

Aeon_of_Ethereal Thursday, January 24th 2013, 3:27 AM
Awesome! Mine's a Wacom Bamboo Pen CTL-470. The driver's just updated for it so it had been a bit wonky earlier in the week.

Also, think I'm good to do a second tryout picture? I've got an awesome idea for one that I'd be able to do after my work week is over (because it's going to take forever to draw)

ZacharyB Friday, January 25th 2013, 2:53 AM
Hi Aeon; welcome. Naturally you can do a second tryout picture.

Aeon_of_Ethereal Friday, January 25th 2013, 3:30 AM
I was wondering since the rules say that if the first isn't approved at all to just practice for 2 months. Since there's no defined "approved" "declined" feature I wasn't sure.

ZacharyB Friday, January 25th 2013, 5:04 AM
Oh... Those must be a written holdover from long ago, when this oekaki was more active and was receiving many tryouts.

Ailaik Friday, January 25th 2013, 1:35 PM
Yeah, this is/used to be a high-end Oekaki board, so I guess as long as it shows that you put a decent amount of effort in your work, it's ok to post things.
I dunno, haven't seen the owner of this place for ages, or any other person with authority, so there's nobody to kick you off the board either ;)

Aeon_of_Ethereal Friday, January 25th 2013, 1:43 PM
Aha, well in that case, I'll keep my drawings on here upwards of 2-3 hours for time.

I'll admit it's odd trying to get used to an Oekaki after using nothing but Photoshop and Paint Tool Sai for so long.

kremmel Friday, January 25th 2013, 10:17 PM
With oekaki, you can also just navigate away from/close out the page that loads after you press the 'upload' button, and it will be posted to your oekaki gallery (when you search your username) without being posted to the main page. I do this a lot when I feel like the art I created isn't worth bumping down other's work.

I really like the endearing, sweet expression. You did a good job of conveying the youthfulness.

Aeon_of_Ethereal Friday, January 25th 2013, 11:16 PM
Yeah, the safety saves. I've used Oekakis before, but it was a long time ago.

And I've been sculpting baby wyverns lately so I've had some practice getting their adorable little smiles just right.

Aeon_of_Ethereal Wednesday, January 23rd 2013, 5:17 AM
This is neat, though it'd been interesting to see lighting effects on it as well.

Droog Thursday, January 24th 2013, 11:12 PM
I respectfully disagree, I like the stylistic choice to use flat color. This is sweet. I think you forgot to fill the background color to that nice gray/purple you chose, though. Like between the legs and the left horn.

kremmel Friday, January 25th 2013, 10:33 AM
Thank you both. I agree it would have been interesting to see the lighting effects, but I decided that I preferred the challenge of conveying a melting effect through line rather than rendering. I purposely chose to leave the spots separated from the main body of the background black- I quite liked the way it played into the picture by the time I was done with it.

menopause Sunday, January 27th 2013, 9:30 AM
everything about this is great! i don't think you should have done anything differently.

I made a 30-day drawing challenge since all the ones I found suck. I'll post it if anyone's interested.

"11:53AM, SATURDAY, MAY 28, 2011
...I was hanging out with a small scientist guy in the woods, and we found a dragon. He had a long, black body, and a pointed, malformed Chinaman face, and whiskers, and tiny people arms. We kept trying to take pictures with him, but he just looked like a funny little man. The scientist got mad and left. I stayed with the dragon, I liked him. Then gypsies kidnapped me..."

ZacharyB Saturday, January 26th 2013, 2:55 AM
In the year 2495, the human race develops the next generation of computer, called the "color computer" due to its using "color bits" instead of binary bits to compute data. One month later, a small patent firm is testing out a breakthrough device that uses color computing to communicate directly with space. It could mean a revolution for the way the whole of humanity interacts with its dreams. Things are really looking up.

Suddenly, a mysterious alien presence appears out of nowhere and announces that the entire population of Earth must evacuate the solar system due to our star, the Sun, being a target for research. The testing team for the miraculous new device stands up to the order and, in retalliation, is teleported to Pluto and left to die.

That would have been the case, except, it turns out that we are not the only native presence in the solar system. A small team from each planet, apparently far more advanced than Earth, is now rallying to save the Sun. The ship from Earth must accompany them, even at the risk of losing its own identity as a solar superpower.
