Mary steals people's souls by cutting of their face but only after they have been mentally prepared awhile. it is a long process she can only do it to certain people who are vulnerable. she then wears them like trophies but she sort of feeds off them.

Yeah, I realized it was just a background. So I changed that.

uh.........there really isn't much to crit considering it's only a background
and i clicked it thinking it'd be bigger but it's pret small so i guess..uh...
it's a great background but for a tryout it doesn't really show us anything

gathering from what everyone else said, you can't retouch tryouts after they've been submitted.

lumpy. space. princess. Sunday, January 9th 2011, 3:27 AM
By you saying you realized it was just a background did you mean you had the foreground layer accidentally turned off and so you turned it back on?
good luck!

avatar
.. Hm. Oh.. Well, what do I do then?

deadmoki Sunday, January 9th 2011, 12:06 PM

I keep noticing other artists do this: cover the whole picture with a shading layer (as in set on multiply or whatever) then erase it to get the light back in. I'd never even considered doing this before, is it a better way to shade or something?

Gyarados Saturday, January 8th 2011, 1:00 PM
avatar
i don't know it kind of depends on the person??? since diff people have diff ways.

Takio Lamary Saturday, January 8th 2011, 4:19 PM
avatar
I personally wouldn't do that because
it makes the shading really monotonous
instead of varying from place to place as it
would normally do. But whatever works for you.
:/

Kelli Saturday, January 8th 2011, 8:36 PM
avatar
I do it that way when I'm lazy XD
or cell shading...

Rhyu Saturday, January 8th 2011, 9:09 PM
I'm with Takio, it sort of limits what you can do with colors and might not work well over all colors on a subject and having to make multiple colored area to erase is not a whole lot easier than just shading normally. You'd have to go back again to add stronger light too unless you're working with a very dark overlay as well. There is also the issue where it doesn't change in saturation as well, though most people don't do that anyway unless they're really quite focused and know what they're doing.

That said, I suppose it could work for quick pictures and giving a bit of shape, as in here.

Ugh. I chose a really bad time to try out.

Basically, this is just a slightly abstract drawing I made of two characters of mine. Got lazy on the shading; visible, but hard to see.

I realize that now the intermediate and advanced oekakis have merged together, not even this thing that I've worked on for an hour will get above borderline. But hey, doesn't hurt to try ;3 Tell me what you think!

Takio Lamary Saturday, January 8th 2011, 3:30 AM
avatar
Well, "got lazy on the shading"
isn't a very great thing to say
if you're trying to impress other
artists in hopes that you may be
accepted. Nevertheless, I'll withhold
my decision till after your second
tryout.

Not to be too persnickety, but what
we would very much enjoy seeing is
your actual potential skills. I believe
that you put a good amount of effort
in accordance to your desire to join here.
That being said, I still, and I hope you can
agree with me, think that a bit more due
diligence is required when showcasing the
absolute greatness of your abilities.
I simply feel that this fails to establish that.

Gyarados Saturday, January 8th 2011, 6:37 AM
avatar
"Got lazy on the shading"
big mistake, lame excuse. don't even expect to get in when you're not even putting in full effort.

"not even this thing that I've worked on for an hour will get above borderline" if so, practice more and improve!

Vemreals Saturday, January 8th 2011, 5:05 PM
avatar
Ah, I've been told not to use excuses before. XD Sorry about that, I'm usualy more confident o.o

Well, perhaps in the second tryout, I'll put great effort in my anatomy ;3

That feeling you get after HOURS on an airplane.....

Or is that Jetlagged?

Rhyu Saturday, January 8th 2011, 9:30 AM
Last time I was on an airplane I was just simply dead tired to the point to being a zombie. Might have something to do with all the re-routing and stay overs that made me spend three days either in airports or planes without sleep. Certainly wasn't feeling high, more like 6 feet under by the time I finally got home xD.

this is a pretty cool concept though

aiko-sama Saturday, January 8th 2011, 4:29 PM
