Tryout 2

I'm really happy with this. I thought the mug looked plain without anything on it, so I added something from what I use to put on my pictures to see if anyone remembers me. :)

I drew it with my laptop's sketchpad. Soooore fingers!

Rhyu Tuesday, January 18th 2011, 11:51 PM
This is both really awesome and sort of... clunky at the same time. Like the bits and pieces (eg. the face, the arms, the legs) in their own isolated worlds are really nice, excellent skin tone choices. However, they just don't... flow together.

A large part of the issue is the color bleeds. You've got fuzzy edges in a picture thats just too realistic and refined in most other places for fuzzy edges to look like much more than sloppiness. Eg. her arms have a fog around them and have blue on their edges which doesn't really seems to have any reason to be there. Or her toes hidden under her other leg... they have like sparkly glowy things going on. Same thing where the arms meet the shirt, and there is a point (near the elbow) where the shirt partially overlaps her arm.

The second issue is inconsistency in shading. The face is really cool, you've got all sorts of colors, drop shadows, a stronger lightsource etc. Overall its really nicely done (though the cast shadow by the nose is a little off- it has no shape to it such as a point where her nose is longer and therefore blocks more light and could be softened a little. Other than that though the face is really amazing. Unfortunately, like in your last picture, its almost "too good" for the rest of the picture.

Speaking of the rest of the picture, it has a completely different lightsource from the face and has no where as much detail/refinement in shading as the face. It also varies on the body. The leg closet to us is actually quite nicely done, but then the hand resting on it is almost impressionistic (and the shading on the fingers doesn't really make sense). The dress doesn't even have a light source. Each of the swirls is doing its own thing and there is no universal shading across it. She's also a little too shiny in some places (like her arm or colorbone), makes her look greasy.

However, overall the anatomy is pretty nice (though flat as a board again >_> -cough-) as are your general abilities with the tools and capacity to shade (individual pieces at least, especially the face). As such, I vote in.

stroganoff Wednesday, January 19th 2011, 12:15 AM
i like you, i really like you.
i definitely feel like you could use some more practice on depth and lighting/shading. but you're really good already.

What bugs me is the texture on the carpet is not effected by perspective/distance.

Otherwise this is a beautiful tryout, in!

Gyarados Wednesday, January 19th 2011, 8:39 AM
oh man the shading makes it look like she's made of plaster/wax/plastic

For some reason I always keep having these moments where I worry about my future. I want to go to a college but I always feel like I couldn't make it. Also I want to major in art but I don't know what I'd do. :T

Takio Lamary Tuesday, January 18th 2011, 12:35 AM
Oh no no no. Major in Business,
and minor in Art if you're really that
passionate about art. A business
degree will get you anywhere; Art,
not so much. Since Business is
essentially everything.

ghost Tuesday, January 18th 2011, 12:50 AM
lol wut
if you're 'really passionate about art' i don't see why you wouldn't make it your major. Not to mention most of the schools offering better art courses are just art schools, not offering other misc courses. at least as far as i know.

City Lights Tuesday, January 18th 2011, 1:04 AM
@ghost: Uh wrong wording. Sorry lol. I meant that if I did ever major in art I don't know if I'd do animation, graphic design, illustration, ect.

@Takio: I can see your point. ah ha ha

jessoso Tuesday, January 18th 2011, 1:07 AM
i disagree. it depends on what type of art you're going into and where you live, etc. right now i'm pursuing a career in art and it ISN'T hard at all and you can get very far in it. maybe not filthy rich but you can deff make a decent living off of you and your art.

it definitely depends on the major, though. if you're majoring in general "art", it's pretty difficult to get work and you have to find it yourself. however, if you're going into graphic design., animation, illustration etc., it's a lot easier to find connections such as internships in various companies and the school you go to generally throws you out into the field your junior and senior year, so finding a job after you get your major is even easier. it's hard to get work in art on your own but incredibly easy to make connections through school.

(Edited on January 18, 2011, 1:10 am)

jessoso Tuesday, January 18th 2011, 1:12 AM
basically, connections help an artist make it in the real world as an artist, and college will give you this very easily. if you want to go into art, go for it. takio is wrong

City Lights Tuesday, January 18th 2011, 1:15 AM
@jessoso: Thanks for that feedback. I really needed that c:

Zero~ Tuesday, January 18th 2011, 1:19 AM
i think we all get a little uppity about university and our futures. it's probably more normal than we think it is.

i'm just a high school student so i don't know much about anything, i guess. but i'd say go for what you want to. if you're doing something you love in life and you're having fun, it's probably worth it.

i hope you feel better <3

City Lights Tuesday, January 18th 2011, 1:27 AM

did takio just assume someone would actually want to major in business

Takio Lamary Tuesday, January 18th 2011, 3:16 AM
I'm just saying that a business major
is a great option is you want a good
paying job right out of college. Shoot
me for being honest, but I've never
seen Art, (as much as I know we all love
it) as a shootthebreeze way of life. My father
was an artist before he went back to get
a major in business as an investment, which
apparently is quite difficult, but nevertheless,
and I'm just speaking from the experience
of those I know, but an Art major is hard to get
work from unless you absolutely know 100%
what you're doing.

Also, it's all about knowing the right people,
anyone ever seen "Exit Through the Giftshop"?
If so, you'd know that that one guy wouldn't
have had a chance in hell if he didn't get that
quote from Banksy.

But, I've said enough. Do what you wish, and
hope for the best.

oh wait rereading keeko's comment, okay no
I absolutely agree. Shoot, now it sounds like I'm
echoing. Okay nevermind.

Vincon Tuesday, January 18th 2011, 6:02 AM
i am banksy actually. :/;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

kremmel Tuesday, January 18th 2011, 6:07 AM
this is what i believe: life is way too short to not do exactly what you WANT to do. even if you won't get a lot of money, does that really matter? at the end of your life, you will not be thinking about all the things you had, but all the good times you had.

so if you want to do art, if you're passionate about art, do it. cause dis is lyfe, baybee, and it only happens once!!!

a kim Tuesday, January 18th 2011, 7:56 AM
banksys an overrated
cunt with too much
ego who thinks he knows
everything. like kremmel
and keeko said, basically
do what you want. you only
have one life. and having
money isnt what will make
you happy, even if some
people put that idea into
your head its not true.
just doing what YOU want to
do is what will make you

lately i have decided that there is actually a lot of happiness linked with money, despite what everyone else says

i think this because i don't have a lot of money and i am miserable a lot because of it

buttttt i am still going to school for whatever i want, so its whatever

Dobie Wednesday, January 19th 2011, 1:01 AM
not having enough money to live comfortably is a good way to be miserable.

so is pursuing a degree in something you have no interest in just to pay the bills.
it's not that hard to find a compromise.

Takio Lamary Wednesday, January 19th 2011, 1:07 AM
I've never really understood
the statement, "life is too short"
because, if you think about it,
what in your lifetime do you
experience that is longer than
life? Death? I don' think death is
an experience, rather a state of
nothingness, where here you are
in a box or a vase, doing pretty much
nothing. All the time, forever. It's
probably not as bad as people make it
out to be, probably not even boring
since the very idea of being bored isn't
even possible when you're dead.

Oh life...

Dobie Wednesday, January 19th 2011, 2:48 AM
thats a little irrelevant

Zayger Wednesday, January 19th 2011, 8:18 AM
Ok I'm gonna pop in with my 2 cents. If you're okay with the idea of not immediately having a job (that's not limited to art majors tho..even engineers could have a hard time if they arent willing to move around), having to work a little bit harder with job searching, or not making as much money as the other "ttly rich" careers, do what you really want to do and go art. I personally have no experience with art school and how many people get steady, decent paying jobs, but you can't deny business/engineering/computer science careers are the biggest ones out there right now.

Howeverrr going through college doing a major you arent interested in isn't fun and may make you miserable. The only compromise is to do a hard/boring major while still making time to pursue whatever you enjoy doing (minor in art, do freelancing/commissions on the side, etc). You can also become a reality tv star. If you absolutely want to make a career out of it, go to an art school! if it's still just like a hobby or whatever and you dont want to spend the rest of your life drawing... but you're too scared to try anything else.... just go do a diff major. No one said you have to complete college in 4 years. those are for people who know exactly what they want to do, or just dont want to change their minds.

Also even if you choose a major dont be scared to change it to something else. thats not uncommon at all. If you dont like graphic design try illustration classes, and maybe you can change your major later if you decide you enjoy them more. It feels like the only thing I'm decent at is art (sad because I have no real foundation in it) yet I'm trying to get a degree in something else that makes my eyes bleed when I see the classes I have to take. plus i lost the motivation to draw so it sucks x2. don't end up like me haha.

Dobie Wednesday, January 19th 2011, 5:28 PM
if you think you want to do art but aren't sure, it's a good idea to start as an art major at a university because if you change your mind it'll be much easier to change your major within the school than to transfer from an art school to a different school

cheeto Thursday, January 20th 2011, 3:19 AM
yeahhh i definitely recommend going to an actual university rather than a specialized art college if you're not sure, much easier to switch majors

Hi a bunch of you probably don't remember me/know who I am.

Basic question time:
It's been exactly 6 months since my last picture here give or take a day and I'm wondering if whenever I'm able to draw more again I'll need to re-tryout or if this thing counts as a ~safe holder~.

For the past 6 months due to medical reasons I haven't been able to draw period, the only reason this was pooped out is because I'm on bed rest on drugs using my laptop mouse. Hopefully what I'm saying makes sense (see part about drugs).

SO YEAH. My guess is that I'll need to re-tryout, but I figured I might as well ask.

Rhyu Monday, January 17th 2011, 10:34 PM
Lol, its cheap, but it counts. Most people here only spam to stay active anyway, so its no different really. Besides, you've been active otherwise and your art is up to standards anyway. Had you not mentioned it I personally wouldn't have even noticed your time was running out. For the most part that works more on a honesty system anyway. Unless no one has seen you for a long time and when you do return your art isn't to the standard to the board (obviously so), most wont question you anyway since you'll have pre-existing post records on your profile showing you were previously accepted.

I hope your feeling better/things clear up for you soon

Paintz Monday, January 17th 2011, 10:43 PM
I was actually going to ask whether this oekaki was very active at all anymore anyways haha. But ok, thanks so much for clearing all that up.

And thank you. <3

lumpy. space. princess. Thursday, January 20th 2011, 9:38 PM
They used to have spam wars here, didn't they? might be a good idea to get people active again. The sketcher oekaki is really dead, too. I think it is because eevee's deviantart isn't bringing in any more traffic.
