ok a friend of mine and i were talkin and i want to propose this idea to sro. i've been here for a long time blahblahblah it changed a lot an' stuff and ev1 doesn't really come on much but
what is with this tryout system ???
is this like...
the only oekaki that does it anymore ??? i feel like it's misleading like oh we're top dogs you've gotta TRY OUT to get into this place but
i just thought... why not have everyone draw on sso for default and by admins
they can get a mail saying oh you're allowed to draw on sro :S no tryouts just
go ahead draw here if you'd like ???
i'm sure this has been brought up before but... lol what a silly system WHO NEEDS THIS if you want critique, you can just
ask for it... and i think this place would have a lot less poop going on with a much more relaxed way of letting people draw here i suppose

thoughts? i d'unno. just wanted to let that out there. AND I KNOW i don't draw here very much i mostly stay on sso but it would be nice if sro was KINDA like it used to be? more. relaxed. yeah.

a kim Monday, June 13th 2011, 8:10 AM
avatar
yeah i think itd be a better idea but the admins would have to have a really soli understanding of what intermediate should be? i feel like thats the main problem of sron right now is that our standards are SOOOOOOO fucking inconsistent its impossible to really know what they are

stroudle Monday, June 13th 2011, 8:12 AM
avatar
That sounds like a good idea on paper, but I feel like it would just lead to everyone nagging admins you know?

AM I GOOD ENOUGH YET? WHY NOT? HOW ABOUT NOW?

So it would still be kind of the same thing. I don't know those are just my two cents. I agree that things here are a bit tense but I'm not positive it's all the tryouts fault. They just kind of bring it up sooner? Like people that cause drama will cause drama no matter what. Tryouts just kind of let us know who will be jerks and who won't.

cheeto Monday, June 13th 2011, 8:12 AM
avatar
weazie advanced oekaki does tryouts but just one and it's a lot more laid back, just a general "can you draw" thing from what i can tell?? but yeah tryouts in general seem really antiquated, they make me feel like i'm in 2006 lol
like kim said though my biggest problem is that i have NO clue what the standards are anymore and i don't think anyone else does either

ribcage Monday, June 13th 2011, 8:14 AM
avatar
no offense to anyone already in here but
i feel like the consistency varies so much since ok
there are some
really old members who just
haven't improved in years SORRY TO SAY ???
it makes me feel bad having such high standards for tryouters but it's like oh this person who doesn't know very much still draws here 6_9

also i'm a pretty active admin on sso and there are a few more active ones too so it's not too bad? the oekakis are so dead that i don't think that would be much of an issue. the whole... nagging thing!!

. Monday, June 13th 2011, 8:14 AM
the tryout system is kinda outdated...this place is radically different from the way it was years ago. i wish there was an overhaul of some sort b/c eevee really has left this place for dead, and...idk. i think getting rid of the need for tryouts would be good. though i have no idea what it would be supplemented with, it would depend on whether or not people want an "intermediate" oekaki.

kimchi Monday, June 13th 2011, 8:20 AM
I agree in parts
I feel that the whole system is silly (why bother with denominations anyway anymore just draw shit and get crits) but I think that yeah it's a great deal in part due to the inconsistency of STANDARDS
I am unsure whether or not people could easily go about changing their standards (calm down because it's SUCH A BIG DEAL dear lordy) but I think if we changed the rules/made them easier for follow??? there are a lot of rules on technical acceptances but in terms of judging the pics themselves there is nothing...
I don't necessarily agree that admins get to decide who is out who is in but maybe like..
guidelines on WHAT EXACTLY IT MEANS TO BE INTERMEDIATE~~~~ but I suppose that's somewhat vague too since art is all shapes and sizes
either way I just hope everything works out but in the end I don't really bother

fgsfdsdasdfffffff Monday, June 13th 2011, 8:21 AM
AM I ONE OF THOSE MEMBERS O_O

also yea eeve basically isnt here anymore we could do liek anything who cares

stroudle Monday, June 13th 2011, 8:21 AM
avatar
Oh okay then if you're an admin and you wouldn't mind then I think that's a great idea. Because I do agree, it's really annoying to hold people to higher standards and then see some members....just...lack improvement to put it nicely.

wally west Monday, June 13th 2011, 8:23 AM
avatar
to avoid the problems with legitimacy of admins' standards, maybe there could be like a group decision in the oekaki chat or something??? i mean shit we got this resource and no one aint even ever use it yo

ribcage Monday, June 13th 2011, 8:24 AM
avatar
NO FIGS you're like *_* art queen *_* *_*

and yeah idk the whole admin thing it was just an idea since idk what would balance the no tryouts??? i just feel like tryouts in general are UNNECESSARY and if you have to question yourself whether you're intermediate or not, just... don't draw here? or if you're not sure, draw something and ask for critique and if it's not too bad, just... draw here ???

fgsfdsdasdfffffff Monday, June 13th 2011, 8:26 AM
it is kinda nice to try and do a big thing sometimes tho yanno its like the different between "study" and "finished painting"

oh i remember i used to TRY SOMETIMES TO MAKE A REAL GOOD PIECE...BACK WHEN WE ARCHIVED STUFF!!! now nobody archives anything so its like who cares (again)

Takio Lamary Monday, June 13th 2011, 8:28 AM
avatar
I like this idea, or even just if they have a dA account, just say "hey guys this is how I draw, can I come in?" and show their art in a portfolio form online.

SockRockets Monday, June 13th 2011, 8:28 AM
avatar
that would be effective for the most part but there are
certain admins
that i worry about here (trying not to name names) saying, "oh this person draws way better than me they should be in too"
and standards would go even further downhill than they already have

stroudle Monday, June 13th 2011, 8:28 AM
avatar
I don't want to, like, impose rules of other oekakis but basically at some other oekaki I draw at, you draw a picture and if people like it then hey awesome. If people think it's not up to standards they let you know and you can continue drawing but only if you make the improvement. It's not really like a tryout just basically a "hey im decent whats up?"

THAT DOESNT MAKE SENSE BUT IM TIRED SO UM basically as long as you can tell that people have a decent sense of anatomy, color, composition, etc. it's good. Things don't have to be perfect and sometimes it feels like this place insists they do.

Takio Lamary Monday, June 13th 2011, 8:31 AM

^ Good idea.

SockRockets Monday, June 13th 2011, 8:36 AM
avatar
also i get the feeling that this might lead to some people just
letting their friends in because they're friends
idk with any system there's going to be problems and i see this would be one of them

ribcage Monday, June 13th 2011, 8:47 AM
avatar
yeah i every system is flawed also but i think this is a much better alternative than the tryouts? i also like stroudle's idea a lot but i guess the ultimate decision goes to eevee1 of course.

but... she's not online very much so this probably wouldn't happen until a few months heh :S

May Monday, June 13th 2011, 8:51 AM
avatar
yeah this entire tryout system is just really outdated, it's just hard to set standards for something as fluid as art, I think? Which is the main problem, especially accounting for differences in style. Sometimes I feel you could test people on technical skill and stuff but like ... idk idk I'm just rambling haha.

ribcage Monday, June 13th 2011, 9:11 AM
avatar
no no you make sense in ramblins
it's just all so subjective and all i want is for there to be no tryouts since
it's such a dumb thing to have on an oekaki
like...
oekaki means
doodle
doodle you guys
DOODLE this
ain't serious ??? it can be but MOST OF THE TIME it's goofing around...

Grier Monday, June 13th 2011, 5:45 PM
I'm not accepted yet, but this is an issue that's really important to me.
For almost 10 months now, I've been waiting for a good time to try out. I've known about the board for years, and I've always wanted to draw here. But every time that I try to start something, I'll see another tryout get completely bashed. It seems like there are certain 'styles' that everyone loves, regardless of anatomy or any other rules. I've seen some tryouts that aren't full body, and because so many members like the drawing, thats rules doesn't get mentioned. However, another person will tryout, and even if they're really good, but their style isn't something that everyone is used to, people will start to nitpick and pull the rules on them.

It can be really intimidating. It's really frustrating because it's a challenge to be able to squish a fullbody figure into the canvas without making the piece so elaborate you have to spend forever on it. This isn't the advanced board, it's intermediate. It should be that as long as the person can use the programs, and can show that they seem comfortable with what they do, they should be allowed to draw here.

Personally, I like Takio's idea. A dA account allows people to see previous art. Even if it's a traditional medium, it would become obvious if they are competent enough to draw here. I feel like more people would feel less intimidated this way, including me.

I'm sorry if this is too long, or offends someone. It's just that there isn't an opinion on here from someone who will be trying out it seems. I hope that what I have to say will make some sort of sense. :/

ribcage Monday, June 13th 2011, 6:24 PM
avatar
it's not long at all and you bring up very good points! i'm sorry that you feel intimidated by the standards and i don't think anyone should feel that way on an oekaki board since it's kind of just a website to have fun and draw? i'll probably get around to contacting eevee1 about it but i understand she's really busy with her matters offline.

mewstara Monday, June 13th 2011, 8:31 PM
avatar
I think the problem with the system is technically the admins would be accepting/denying people to try out would be that it would somewhat be based on personal preference. I do whole heartily agree with the standards though.. It has been very vague. I don't really know how to go about fixing it besides making a list saying they have to have:blahblahblah down pact, etc. etc. etc.

I like Stroudle's idea a lot though. =u= I just don't want it going into a popularity type thing. Like..if someone on SSO come off as a douche, and the members just say eff off. Or if someone is just a couple of SRO member's friend auto getting in.

DA account sounds like a pretty good idea too. A lot of people, myself included, avoid DA like the plague though. Also my friend irl Piosa who used to go here was so paranoid about posting her artwork online..so she never had a gallery up for more than 3 days.

So dunno, no tryouts sounds nice, but it also sounds like we'd all have to figure out a solid system first.

Grier Tuesday, June 14th 2011, 6:40 AM
That's very true Mewstara. I don't really like my dA either. :/
