I was distracted for a while, and in between forgot what I was going for until it was too late. Oh well XD Hi
I havent done anything digital in months. had fun. Water texture never ever looks right to me. I could correct the unevenness, but itd just make it feel weirder for me personally. yup.

This is pretty sweet, have you tried out yet? If that still counts here..

I don't think tryouts should persist. Not only does this place have very little activity any longer, but the state of the art has changed. In the past, tryouts had to be "full body," but this has no bearing on the type of skill that allows a person to make money with art these days. If oekaki boards are training grounds for artists, I'd consider it unethical to hold people to such an obsolete standard.

I'd consider this excellent picture and a few others that I've seen as tryouts on this board to already be well into the range of what it means to be an artist these days. Art doesn't have to be technical. All art needs to be is convinced of its own beauty.

That, and judging what ibex is already working on, I'd say he's more than welcome here.

people still post on the other board frequently enough. from my perspective i see tryouts as terrifying. i'm not perfect in everything i draw but i have some really good pieces posted on deviantart and tumblr, but for some reason when i try to tryout here i just get so stressed out that i mess up my pieces. at the same time i dont feel its right for me to post on the other board, theres a lot of young kids and inexperienced people and i'm an adult that wants to get into art as a career, so i don't really know where i fit in between these two boards. of course i check in here every day to see what you guys come up with but i feel bad for not being able to contribute at all. im not saying the rules in place should be remove because of me, i don't want to be a burden to you guys and make it kinda awkward for everyone if my stuff isnt as good as everyone else's stuff. i kinda get the motivation for keeping those rules at the same time though, you wouldnt want people from the other board flocking over here. I guess my suggestion would be like let them post one thing of anything they like and if its like really obviously inexperienced work (you know, poorly drawn anime, messy drawings, etc.) then you should point them to the other board but if the work posted at least shows promising signs of improvement then yeah let them post here

and honestly why hold people to a standard of perfection in their tryouts when the regular stuff posted isnt held to absolute perfection? i think what people like about the artists that post here is that they dont get everything down to a perfect detail but their art has character and feeling behind it. even college applications dont expect mastery of art in a high school portfolio, they look for signs that could indicate future improvement. I mean, yeah, your work in a high school portfolio still has to be pretty good, but you wouldnt see absolute perfection in it. what im saying is, i think part of the low activity here is that the tryouts might kinda scare people away. and theyre a bit dated, it seems like when they were written a lot of people on the board drew characters and such, so it was expected for people to know anatomical structures decently to be allowed to post here. now theres a variety of work being posted here, from landscapes to comics to abstract stuff and more. the terms of acceptance should not only be about basic skills but show room for improvement, because nobody's perfect. but its ok that nobody's perfect. thats why i think the rules should be modified a bit to be more tolerant and up to date.

Unfortunately, the original creator of this oekaki never drops by any longer, due to now having a career of her own.

In the end, I don't think you can be banned or anything drastic like that, especially if you've already contributed in the ways of comments and hanging around. In my opinion, you should just sketch and draw. The only one who can think negatively of art in a meaningful way is either you or a future employer. I might even say that it's futile to practice using an oekaki board, and that traditional media is the way to go, but times have really changed. Who knows now?

Art is a weird trade. If you have a blacksmith, who makes axes, and you go to the blacksmith because you want an axe, and pay for it, you expect an axe that will cut wood. It's cut and dry. If the axe does not cut wood, it is an inadequate axe, simple as that... not what you paid for.

But art is different. It will always have application somewhere. An inadequate axe becoming a great butter knife. Because of this, learning to make salable art is tricky, because it is always good as long as its perfect fit can be found.

I don't think practicing on an oekaki board is futile. Learning any medium is great, and there are plenty of jobs out there now that need digital art. I myself would like to do video game concept art someday. Photoshop is generally better for digital art but the programs provided here are more laid back and easier to get into, and I think its good to have something you can get comfortable with in terms of digital art. And personally I like the techniques I can use in the oekaki programs, they aren't easily replicated in Photoshop.

The tryouts intimidate me, but since this board has existed, it has been my goal to get better and get in.
