well i tried to redo my first tryout here http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v298/deadwing/83992_DONE.png

but idk i suck at shading still. need more practice
crits are always welcome! trying to improve as an artist

if you want to succeed in shading, you might want to determine the light source/direction first
I like your style and choice of colour, but the shading does indeed not make much sense here..

is that better? i was going for a strong backlighting

it's really good but you have some lighting in areas away from the light source (dragon's upper wing, hawk's tail and butt, dragon's arm, dragon's spike, hawk's neck, dragon's shoulder area, tip of hawk's tail). i also feel like the highlights should be a cooler color (in terms of hue not opinion) but maybe that's a stylistic choice, it doesn't really hurt the piece. you should definitely have that moon really clean and detailed, i think it would make the sky look better. i really like the improvement from the original piece though, there's a lot more understanding of how lighting works going on here and there's so much more flow and activity and movement in the picture. (:

I disagree with the statement that the lighting hits areas away from the light source. They're in space, the moon is behind them, and there are stars. There honestly could be lighting all over the place in this. I do however agree that the lighting should be a cooler color, like a lighter blue or something like that. I'll try to do you some sorta highlight/shading correction thing.

Stars don't emit enough light on earth to really cast light on an object. And i really don't think they're in space, it seems more realistic they'd just be fighting in a very lower area of the sky. I could understand if the lighting coming from the other side was from a lower part, it could be coming from some sort of light on the ground like a fire or lamp in that case, but here it's coming from above and doesn't really make much sense.

Well, that really depends on where they are (earth or space) and how they are (they could very well be upside down), doesn't it?
If you are going for backlighting here, keep the light's color in mind. The moon is white-blue-ish, you shaded (lighted?) with green light. It destroys the connection between the lightsource and the light and makes it feel 'off'.
Also, remember light goes in (pretty much) straight lines. Take the moon, draw some straight lines coming from it and see where the light should hit and how much it should be visible/how strong it should be in the respective places. And if in doubt it can always help to grap whatever you have lying around (a plushie could do an excellent job) and just hold it against a lightsource placed like the moon. Because nothing beats observation. Ever. :>

Mmhm, it's been ages since I last gave some advice. I won't guarantee for cohesiveness or... well, it being super! correct. Still hope it helps~
