Tryout #2 and this time I decided to do Super Sailor Moon!

I think her bow looks very cool that way. ^^

I say out

Both tryouts show a noticable weakness as far as backrounds are concerned -- they look like afterthoughts and there is no interaction with it, and though its obvious you know anatomy at least a little bit I think I'd like to see you fortify that knowledge a little bit more before trying out again

Also, taking time to neaten the lines can add a lot to the picture, even if the anatomy is good it becomes hard to tell if the lines are very wiggly

Though I like how you did the eyes, the rest of Sailor Moon here is in need of more shading as well -- she appears to be in a space environment so it might be a little difficult to do lighting but generally the light source is strong, the shadows, dark. On the bow on her chest you kind of got that down but didn't do it anywhere else on her body

Again I won't critique anatomy that much because I'm not that good at people either but her arms look a little noodley and her legs don't have kneecaps -- even in front view, you'd see them a little bit, like this-->

http://www.runningteamflash.com/Brian%27s%20Knobby%20Knees.jpg

And a good way to make arms look less doughey is to think in straight lines and add muscules after -- just draw them as poles and then soften them up into a more natural shape, don't go for the natural shape immediately :B

http://ultimate-classical-guitar.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/holdclassicalguitar1.jpg

That's the closest reference I could find for the way she's holding her hands

What I do like about this is you didn't try to skimp on detail, there's a whole lot of it from the decor adorning her outfit in the first place to the little wrinkles and folds of the fabrics, so don't hide the detail! Bring them out with shading and I feel your art would be really pretty :)

A different member here posted this tutorial for lighting and its probably the best I've seen yet, and for once it isn't program-specific-->

Out, and good luck next time. There's potential there, but you need more practice.

I know Sailor Moon characters are very thin and long limbed. But. There's no clear shape definition in the legs, they look flat. Like Worm said, the arms do look noodle-y. If you were going for SM style emulation, her neck is way too thick. And even if not so, the lack of contrast between the neck under her chin and her face makes it hard to see where her neck ends and face begins. Usually if your light source comes from somewhere above-ish, your chin drops a shadow on your neck right under it. Or you use clean line art to show where the chin and jawline are.

The border between the character and the background looks a little iffy too. The colours don't stay inside your line art. Especially the hands caught my attention, they seem to have the thumbs sticking out at really weird angles. The colouring and shading implies the thumbs come up on the same side of her wand as the rest of the hand, which looks really confusing, though I think you meant them to wrap around behind. It looks like all the colouring was done on one layer and not cleaned up with the effort one should try to put into tryouts.

And AFAIK tryouts had to be full body pictures. That includes feet.

Okay thanks for your critiques and advice! I was looking at sailor moon references to match the body and such, and I did use multiple layers, but the program I used would make all the layers into one when I would come back to it to finish it, so it was hard to do so, plus the layers weren't transparent, making it even harder. But I will look into improving my anatomy and shading and such. Thanks ^^

Also am I in or out?

You need to wait for more votes and tally them up once there is enough.

The shading is almost nonexistant in this image, I would think being in space..or in a dark night..she wouldn't be that bold. It looks like there is a light source right on her stomach glowing up her whole body. Since its so dark, a nice pallet of blues and darker colors would have suited it a little better.

Also, unless those are fireflies, the stars look very sloppy. Try to make them very small and add very very few ones that are slightly bigger. Yellow for stars looks unnatural, try using white like in the moon.

Also, I understand if you lost your layers, I did that on my other tryout. But you can't just try to patch it up as quickly as possible. I would erase the some of the outline while taking care of color-bleeds and just draw it back. It looks like you just kinda zoomed in abit and tried to go over the edges with the eraser without touching the lines. That made an outline of color outside of your lines. There are also a ton of places you missed.

shi painter does combine your layers if you leave and come back. if you do shi painter animated the layers stay individual, so i recommend that.

out. like others said, work on anatomy and lightsource, and try to stay inside the lines/keep white spaces from peeking out in your coloring.

out, anatomy and lightsource are iffy
when you think of someone in the dark what colour are they? Not the colour they are in the daytime.
To get into more detail go http://purplekecleon.deviantart.com/gallery/?catpath=/&offset=144#/d31xj5t and go to the 'colour relativity' section

This was inspired from the book Warriors: Sign of the Moon. This is my version of the scene at the end of the book where Jayfeather feels and hears Half Moon's spirit around him and she tells him that she will wait for him forever. What a lovely scene, isn't it? :3 smiley The background is a little off from the actual view I intended, but it's close enough. ^^

You might want to bump this or have an admin move it for you, so people can critique it. :)

Yay! Finally got it to the first page! Now it can be critiqued!

since it's night, the environment should bemuchdarker,
also, on the gray cats tail, the light source is comingfor
the right, while on it's front it's coming from theleft, try
keeping the light source consistent. i assume it's coming
from the moon(?), so the lightest areas should be facing the moon.
Same with the reflections on the eye. Also,
the light source seems to be very strong, if so the
shading should be more in depth

i can't quite tell what they are sitting on, is it dirt, or
rocks?I think you could've gone more in detail in it
so it would be more clear what it was.

i hope this helped you, if not, feel free to
ask questions (: good luck with ur tryouts.

this is soo sweet! and the way you made the spirt transparant has a really nice effect. (:
good luck~

Thanks for the advise! Lol I was doing this really late and just did the background fast. But yeah I messed up the cat's shading. I was trying to make a light bounce thing, but I guess that didn't work out as much. On my next tryout I will for sure keep to a consistent light source and such. :3

HoshiSorano Saturday, April 23rd 2011, 4:23 AM
Oh and they are suppose to sit on rocks but like I said I was very tired. Maybe I'll fix the tail and background later on when I have time :)

aah alright! sorry, but you cant edit your tryouts when
you've posted them. : Remember, if you ever feel tired
and want a break, just safety save! it will save
where you were last and remains under
admin->edit pics until
you get the motivation again to want to finish and post it.

HoshiSorano Saturday, April 23rd 2011, 10:56 PM
Lol Yeah I am such a noob because I didn't know where the safety save was at first and found out when I finished! That's why I probably sounded like an idiot!
