I just remembered I never did finish this picture... and I've always wanted to try drawing a Sneasel. smiley

It was originally intended to be a tryout, I think. That would explain May's comment down there. =w=

Blah, the background leaves quite a bit to be desired... but then again Marcey's taking up the whole picture. smiley HOW DARE HE. Hopefully this makes up for the neglect of anatomy in my other tryouts. >w<

Timer lies again. Left it on all night and then some. smiley

EDIT: I don't know why, but the more I stare at that back foot, the more it bothers me. >=T

his arms and legs are like
way too long
also the leg closest to us is twisted in a way that looks really uncomfortable. like his knee is pointed almost directly at us, but the lower leg and foot are facing completely to the right. his body is curved more than it should be in this pose, his pelvis should be curved under, it makes the pose look really unstable.
as for your comment about the back foot, it's probably bothering you because the foot is facing us but the leg is facing outward

i say out

The shading on the face and hair looks great, but the shading on the belly makes the belly look divided in half. Belly fat usually doesn't split vertically like that. The shading on the fabric seems sloppy because the shading is too light and the fabric isn't very defined. Don't be afraid to use darker colours for shading, like you've done with the hair and face, and go more dramatic.

The red you've added in the foreground takes a lot of the depth away from the image, as I can't tell where the red is coming from.

And one tip to you: the light source is yellow. The shading, naturally, would be a shade of purple, as it's the complementary colour of yellow. In this picture, you've only added blue, which is one of the reasons this image lacks some depth.

Another tip to you: the red you've added, I'm assuming it's the light from another light source. You've only visibly highlighted the pants and forgotten about the rest of your foreground. And since it's a light source, you need to shade on the opposite parts, even though there's already the yellow light shining on them. And red light source = green shadows.

The sunset sky looks flat and holds little depth. One way to fix this is to shade the clouds; another way is to give the sky a gradient. It goes from light down to dark on top, even if there are clouds in the sky, even if there is a sunset. Make sure to capture this, it can give life to almost any sky.
http://www.newspecialpictures.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/sky-sunset01.jpg
http://www.hickerphoto.com/data/media/188/sunset-sky-picture_11643.jpg
http://www.turbophoto.com/Free-Stock-Images/Images/Sunset%20Sky.jpg

The perspective looks a bit distorted, as you pointed out yourself. The arm looks TINY and very very long, though I think it's because you've only put the arm into perspective, and not the sleeve. Sleeves, however poofy or big, support themselves on arms, and therefore should follow the same perspective as the arms.
That didn't really make sense, sorry. I hope you get it though ahaha :'D

and and and I just want to say you have improved LOADS since your last tryout session in September.

Good luck <3

Ok well, yes this has a lot of flaws, but this set of tryouts is a huge improvement over your last set, which shows that you are improving.

So, I say in, cuz you've obviously been making progress, and your painting/colouring technique is there.

cheeto Thursday, March 31st 2011, 11:34 PM

you're very skilled at creating images that look good overall, but i really don't see from this and your other two tryouts that you understand anatomy very well. you've improved a lot from your last set of tryouts, so i think if you work for just another couple months to focus on anatomy it'll do you a lot of good. for now, though, i'm going to have to say out.

@SockRockets: Oh! I see what you mean... I didn't really notice those things before. o.o Good points. ^ ^; Thank you!

@FP: >///< Ah, thank you very much ~ smiley

@Cheeto: Hmm... I think where I went wrong was in attempting something new in this last tryout, namely that weird pose. I probably would've been better off just drawing something I already knew to accurately demonstrate the level I'm at anatomy-wise. >w< Oh well, silly me ~ smiley Thank you for the input! ^.^

When did this turn into the advanced board? I remember when this place started out and I was an Admin (EeMo) and our tryout rules were not so harsh... I can't vote because I myself am not accepted yet (due to inactivity) but what happened to people having a style? I think that this drawing is really well thought out, I mean Tim Burton's characters are all out of proportion, and people love him... I think people are too serious about anatomy here... There is obvious talent in this drawing ^_^ It may not be perfect... but I remember when this board was for people to connect, and have a passion for art... I'm sad to know it's not so relaxed here any more :( IF my vote counted it would definitely be in favor of this drawing :)

starfruit, the standards of the board rise naturally along with the skill level of the artists who regularly frequent it.

as for stylization, it's fine as long as it's obviously deliberate. if someone with a more whimsical style, such as your example tim burton, came here and tried out, we wouldn't apply standard rules of anatomy as harshly. but to me, this picture reads as if the artist tried to have proper anatomy and didn't quite have a good enough grasp on it to make it look convincing.

no one here is saying that this artist isn't talented; she very obviously is. however, based on her three tryouts, i personally don't feel like she has enough knowledge of the way a body is put together to adhere to the standards of this board.

Ailaik Friday, April 1st 2011, 10:55 AM
avatar
"the standards of the board rise naturally along with the skill level of the artists who regularly frequent it"
not much of a standard left then, is there? since the number of people visiting is like 20% of what it used to be
I think her art fits the board just fine for what it is now...

emi Friday, April 1st 2011, 11:11 AM

i personally think she's more talented than half the people who've commented. and certainly more talented than many of the members here in general. i bet if everyone tryed out again then there would be very few accepted.

In, since I adore the way you used color in all three of these and your knowledge of using oekaki tools is definitely showing. Personally I can ignore the anatomy and perspective flaws stated above in the other comments because this picture is well-put together otherwise. To me this looks funky and whimsical, it's interesting and fun to look at with the over the top stylizing and dramatic, red color scheme. In my standards I place the atmosphere above perfect anatomy as to me art and design are more about delivering moments and feelings to the viewer. And all your three tryouts do it well enough to make up for the little flaws. I know my view is quite different from this oekaki's standards but I think you are advanced enough to be accepted.

So yes, in.

i really, really like the colors used here, as well as the whole mood of the piece. every part of the environment is done quite nicely. however, the character's proportions are very strange, and that doesn't really show us you know what you're doing anatomy-wise. you had this same problem in your first tryout, so i'd like to see a third tryout from you focusing on showing us that you understand proper anatomy.
